Some Senate Democrats are seeking to empower regulators to protect local news outlets from tech giants

By Keach Hagey Close Keach Hagey Oct. 27, 2020 5:00 am ET Some Senate Democrats are seeking to empower regulators to protect local news outlets, accusing tech giants such as Google and Facebook FB -2.70% of “unfair business practices,” according to a new report by members of a key committee that will hear from the top industry executives this week.

Painting a grim portrait of the state of the local U.S. news industry, the report noted that it had lost 70% of its revenue in the past two decades, while today Google and Facebook control 77% of local digital ad revenue. Democrats don’t currently control committee business in the Republican-controlled Senate, although that could change after the election. Criticism of the tech platforms has been bipartisan lately, though Republicans tend to be more focused on fears that the platforms are silencing conservatives.

Publishers have complained about similar “take it or leave it” dynamics with other Google products, such as Google News and Google Discover, a feed of recommended content.

Wtf TonyBobulinsky

NO surprise DEMs are heading the wrong direction with legislation. The FIRST priority: RESCIND/REPEAL Sec. 230 of 1996 Communications Decency Act to make Social Media platforms accountable and responsible for their 'News' content, as it is for all other media.

Democrats, always wanting to raise taxes.

No work, whether art or news coverage, is an orphan.

Norberta36 Local and regional newspapers critical-they need to be independent and protected

Tech giants need to be curbed. If they are profiting off of independent content they need to pay for said content. News corps can’t live off of subscriptions. The news industry will go belly up and then what? I’m reminded of “V for Vendetta”.

Too little too late. The Republicans already know the news is fake. The Democrats were happy to let the destruction of the media happen as long as they got a slice

It probably should happen, and so should public money to save local small businesses, but if Republicans keep putting in protections for companies that allow them to force people to return to work in a pandemic without protecting workers, that’s a no.

How about you do something actually worth the time, like taking FB and twitter to court. Breaking them up, and making the algorithm public. There is no valid argumenst to protect these biz's that are too big, wield way too much power, and ruining the Constitution.

Big tech must fall.

That will not happen

Seems like 60-70% issue
