“With my new album, I’m centering myself,” says Kelela. “If I start there, I’m serving my core audience of queer Black people, which is really who I think about when I’m making music.”On February 10, the R&B singer and songwriter will drop her first album in six years,Featuring a mix of clubbier tracks and ambient tunes, it marks a creative rebirth of sorts. “It feels like deep cuts,” says Kelela, who allowed her intuition to lead the way.
“It provided me with a lot of reassurance because the melodies came on the first take,” she explains.For this issue, Kelela curated a playlist of artfully celebratory songs, choosing tracks that, while not all overtly joyful, have provided a sense of catharsis for her and her friends. “It clicked that this was about what celebration and joy look like for” she says.
