Washington A federal judge ruled this week that the White House may have to provide American Sign Language interpretation at its televised news briefings on the coronavirus pandemic, in response to a lawsuit brought by the National Association of the Deaf and five deaf Americans.
The order is pending the court's determination on how to implement it and whether it's practical to do so. A hearing has been set for next Thursday.According to court documents, since March, President Donald Trump and the coronavirus task force have not been seen with an ASL interpreter while addressing the American people during the pandemic, though the Trump administration has used interpreters in past briefings, including for hurricanes.
May huh!? INTERESTING .
Trump is already saying he doesnt want one because dont you know people dont want to talk about disabilities let alone see them, yep nobody wants to see all that ugliness. DID ANYONE FORGET TRUMP SAID THIS? He loves the disadvantaged? Wow my God!
Can you imagine an ASL interpreter trying to translate Trump? I don’t even think you can do it with a full team and a week lead time.
I hope they find one of those really lively ones with a super emotive face.
Amos_Makokha Why? All they’ll hear is....
OMG. What else?
I wondered why they didn’t have them. Also at the party conventions!
I want a person in a caption giving his some finger language!
To the deaf and blind community: You deserve to have this for every utterance Trump makes and I just assumed they provided that. Having said that, Trump has never provided valuable, trusted or accurate information so you haven't missed much.
They are too busy fuguring out what Biden is talking about.
All I have to do is hit a button and the words magically appear on the tv screen
Not may. SHOULD. PERIOD.
Why?

It would be such a hard job to be an interpreter at his briefings. Do you sign what he says? ( Is there even a way to sign f yo Semite, mindianaplos, thigh land?) Or do you make corrections, edit out the fillers and hope for the best?
Deaf people trying to understand the interpretation of Trump
What? How about having someone speak for the President, that would solve a lot of confusion!
How the heck do we expect a translator to keep up with his non-prompter word salad?
While they're at it, get a fact checker!!!!
My brother and sister-in-law are deaf and get frustrated that his “speeches” and public announcements aren’t translated in ASL, mostly because closed captioning is consistently inaccurate so they’re often left scratching their heads and wondering what was really said.
They’ll just be signing a pack of lies.
If you’re a translator, and you’re translating lies, does that make you a liar?
