Student loans were optional. People signed the contract by themselves. They should honor that and pay them back. If you went to school for a useless degree thats your fault. Why should the tax payers pay for your mistakes?

Woah! Student loans are a sacred cash cow, somewhat like US healthcare. There's a reason nobody has been able to truly fix or reform either of them for decades, despite very obvious problems pinning people down. The real (final, legislated) details will be interesting to see.
