And of course, every car that doesn’t idle in front of the school allows for cleaner, healthier air for our children to breathe.Paul Ecke’s first Walk/Bike-to-School Day marked the beginning of a journey for me, an opening for engagement in my city, an opportunity to create a home that valued these walking and biking experiences for residents of all ages. The first step came when I taught my son, Misha, how to cautiously ride his bike to school.
But sadly, these youngsters still face so many of the frightening hazards that Misha maneuvered more than two decades ago. Frenzied parents rush to drop-offs and pickups, trying to manage the hectic nature of life with kids and jobs and lots of responsibilities. When I visit Paul Ecke elementary school, looking more like a grandmother than a parent, I wonder how we can revive the simple tradition of our youth — not just walking and rolling to school — but feeling and being safe in the process.
