The House passed a resolution Wednesday afternoon underscoring the United States’ support of Israel and condemning the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas. The measure passed by a 412-10 vote, with six Democratic lawmakers indicating they were “present.” H.R. 771 described the attack as “barbaric” and called on Hamas to release all hostages. This was the first measure passed under the tenure of House Speaker Mike Johnson , who secured the gavel just hours earlier. The 10 who voted against the bill were Reps.
“Do not confuse my vote against this one-sided resolution with a lack of empathy for all those who are grieving. I voted against this resolution because it is a deeply incomplete and biased account of what is happening in Israel and Palestine, and what has been happening for decades.” Massie, the only Republican to vote against the resolution, tweeted that he disagreed with the measure’s stance on foreign aid commitments and open-ended military support, and its call for sanctions on Iran.
