Moscow’s government created Safe City to streamline its public safety systems. In recent years, however, its 217,000 surveillance cameras, designed to catch criminals and terrorists, have been turned against protestors, political rivals, and journalists.

As Russia furthered its march toward authoritarianism in 2021, NTechLab leadership began talking about moving the company abroad, according to people familiar with internal company discussions. But with lucrative government contracts abounding—NTechLabfrom the Russian Direct Investment Fund, the country’s sovereign wealth fund, in September 2020—its investors resisted the idea. The company was also changing.

Similar systems have been developed in some Chinese cities, and Russia is now playing catch-up. “The Russian government would probably like to move toward China, but they do not yet have the necessary technology,” says Kiril Koroteev, head of international practice at the Russia-based Agora International Human Rights Group.

As if anyone actually believed that it was for “public safety” to begin with. This is Russia. Everything everyone does is for dictatorial and/or war reasons.

Don’t give up your freedom out of fear. The perception of safety turns into an unsafe controlled nightmare eventually. Once your freedom is gone, you no longer get to make the choices that keep you free.

I suppose some people like that sort of thing, but it's yet another attack vector for hackers, who may decide that the surveillance ppl are the real criminals and terrorists. I doubt that network is secure, but let's hope it is, I guess? safety first!🤷🏻‍♀️

ildfluer What? Who could have seen that coming?

this tweet is stupid, usa already doing this before, russia not that special not to mention china on public cctvs

wait...they're using the surveillance systems against dissidents?!?! this is absolutely unprecedented 😲😲😲🤪😲

Why would anyone be surprised by this? It's inevitable, if you allow the creation of big mother, eventually it turns into big brother..

So essentially no different from anywhere else in the world.

This is the way.
