I started a dinner series, Sayang, as a pop-up passion project, with the idea of bringing the Indonesian dishes I grew up with to more New Yorkers. Prior to the pandemic, I hosted intimate meals to highlight food from throughout the country, sharing beyond the more well-known. What I didn’t anticipate was how many Indonesians I would meet in the process. After living in New York for over 10 years, I didn’t really have friends I could banter with in my native language.
As our friendship grew, we often came back to the feeling that our culture was rarely represented in a way that felt authentic to us, if at all. For instance, the Indonesian cookbooks that are available are typically written by foreigners. Craving a more meaningful connection to our home, we decided to collaborate on a series, “
,” which showcases common Indonesian ingredients.
