Photo by Noelle Iglesias/Auburn TigersMaybe a bit earlier than expected, Auburn head coach Butch Thompson said in a Thursday press conference that he is planning for star catcher Ike Irish to be back in the lineup this weekend against Ole Miss.
After his injury, Thompson said Irish could be out for possibly three weeks. There wasn’t any need to rush him back with Auburn’s postseason hopes incredibly slim at this point after 10 consecutive SEC losses. Thompson is not quite sure in what capacity Irish will be able to play. Most likely, it will be as a designated hitter. Auburn did not play a midweek game this week due to students’ final exams, but did host a five-inning intrasquad scrimmage on Tuesday.
As a team, Auburn hit .186 without Irish in the lineup against LSU, totaling 18 hits over three games.Even when Irish was healthy, Auburn has been positioning him in different defensive spots or as a designated hitter and getting more time for freshman catcher Cale Stricklin behind the plate. Stricklin has had eight starts since the beginning of April.
