I think it’s safe to say that whether you loved or hated them, if you were raised as a little girl, you have some attachments to Barbie dolls. Whether it’s race, ethnicity, body image or ability, the franchise evokes strong feelings for someone’s inner child.
Still, there’s something very nostalgic about the signature Barbie pink and purple colors, blonde hair and how she stands on her tiptoes to fit into her high heels.The first Barbie launched in 1959, but it took decades for the franchise to embrace inclusivity. Within the last decade, Mattel has come to terms with changing times.
I saw parents and their children showing up wearing matching pink outfits, some of them Barbie-branded. A few young adults my age wore stylish outfits to capture the perfect Instagram photo. The door attendant told us the best place to start was the customizable Barbie add-on station because the area quickly becomes crowded.
