Dramatic video shows firefighters' ladder rescue of a man about to jump from a burning Los Angeles high-rise apartment building. Six people were hospitalized, two in critical condition, authorities say.

News headlines today: Jan. 29, 2020LOS ANGELES -- Firefighters made a dramatic ladder rescue of a man who appeared about to jump from a burning Los Angeles apartment building on Wednesday and helicopters plucked people from the roof of the 25-story high-rise as other terrified residents fled through smoke-choked stairwells to safety.

In addition, two firefighters received minor burns as, using bottled oxygen, they scrambled to reach the apartment where the blaze began. While the fire was confined to a single floor, the whole multi-story building was red-tagged as unsafe because of damage and elevators and fire protection system not working, Scott said.

Gavyn Straus was swimming in the pool in the courtyard when he saw black smoke waft by. As the smoke grew rapidly, Straus knew it was no kitchen fire and he ran into the building dripping wet to alert staff. Instead, he ran to the 21st floor, where he lives, to alert friends and other tenants he knew. No alarm had yet been sounded and he was surprised to hear laughter coming through the doors as people ate breakfast unaware of the danger below.Dr. Tom Grogan, an orthopedic surgeon who works in the building next door, was arriving at his office when he saw flames shooting from the building.

Hope that guy was ok. Geez. We had sprinklers in our HOUSE. It came that way. I grew up in high rises but never in California. We have earthquakes for god’s sake!! 11 injured, 1 gravely, in 'suspicious' Los Angeles high-rise fire on Wilshire BoulevardFirefighters rescued residents from the rooftop of a 25-story residential high-rise in Los Angeles. Fire officials called the fire 'suspicious.' Why no fire / smoke alarms - with previous fire, most especially? A fire of this nature in the building of this size it's bothersome. It would seem that a building such as this should be targeted by municipal legislation to require at the very least, sprinkler systems in the escape routes and hallways. I would urge Los Angeles city council... Doesn’t the word suspicious already imply the quotations?
