For the first seven episodes, Payton is on a quest for school-government glory. It’s not hard to make the connection between his adoption and his ambition here. Payton’s chasing “yes” votes, the feeling of being wanted and accepted. Of course, in real life most children who are adopted grow up into well-adjusted and happy adults.
So…Standish is totally Payton’s mother, right? The casting makes sense: Not only do Light and Platt share a resemblance, they’re also both musically gifted. Andthe woman who gave birth to Payton became a savvy politician. His innate sense of strategy had to come from somewhere, and it certainly didn’t come from his idle, rich adoptive parents.
