People who experience hyperfocus often become so engrossed they block out the world around them. Children and adults with ADHD often exhibit hyperfocus when working intently on things that interest them.

in Washington D.C., such intense concentration is actually a coping mechanism.

“Children with ADHD often gravitate to what’s entertaining and exciting, and are averse to doing things they don’t want to do,” says Joseph Biederman, M.D., head of the pediatric psychopharmacology program at. “Combine this with poor time management and problems socializing, both of which are typical of kids with ADHD, and the child can end up playing Nintendo alone all weekend long.”

“If you have a child who hyperfocuses on a favorite activity, you’ll need to counter this tendency by being extra-vigilant about limiting the time spent on the activity and about being careful to stick to his schedule,” says, a Houston psychologist. “It can also help to make an agreement with your child ahead of time about when the activity can be done, and when it can’t.”

“These children aren’t being disobedient,” says Nadeau. “Their brains just aren’t registering what you’re saying. That’s why the interruption should never be done angrily, and why you should allow a few minutes for the shift in attention to occur. It’s almost like pulling someone out of a dream.” Another of Nadeau’s patients was in the habit of working on his computer after dinner. “He would completely zone out,” says Nadeau, “to the point where his wife would go to bed and he wouldn’t even notice. He’d just keep working until two or three in the morning.” Exasperated, the man’s wife began literally pulling the plug on his computer when bedtime arrived. “It was the only way to get his attention,” says Nadeau.

I call it a superpower. Here’s what my ADHD hyperfocus achieved.

Me with gardening! Or laundry....WHY is it ONLY 1 thing?! Ugh if only it were 4-5 diff projects haha I'd FINALLY have my house clean, garden tended to, dishes, kids, job.. Nope, I focus on 1 thing for 4mo, go to the next, then the next then the next. I HATE MY LIFE 🤯

Yes, and it confuses the hell out of people who know us.

I have both Autism and ADHD and for me, I hyperfocus on Motorola and video games. I also love to crochet too

I see my hyperdrive, as I like to call hyperfocus, as one of my favorite traits. Sure, my family would sometimes get grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner bc I lost track of time, but I actually finished projects & felt more relaxed afterwards—like I’d meditated. ADHD

. I visited this place the other day and now it's My new adhd hyperfocus

And then I forget to eat or sleep or drink water and feel ill.

This is my life exactly 😞 and it’s exhausting

Yup, I go weeks on end hyperfocused on things that only interest me, drives my poor wife up the wall. I’m thinking I get a dopamine boost.

*coughs* When I was a kid the flat below us caught fire. I was so focussed on the book I was reading I didn’t hear my brother screaming in my ear that there was a fireman at the door demanding we leave.

Don't we all.

It’s called tenacity. Words count. Stop perpetuating negative stereotypes with your inaccurate descriptions.

This is my child. Exactly.
