With announcement season just about complete, Democrats now turn to the task of choosing a presidential candidate from a field that shatters records in terms of backgrounds and experiences, writes RickKlein

With announcement season just about complete, Democrats now turn to the task of choosing a presidential candidate from a field that shatters all records in terms of pure numbers and the range of backgrounds and experiences.

The party continues to grapple with questions about what labels like “progressive” and “moderate” mean, and how aggressive to be in tone in opposing the president. It’s already forcing uncomfortable conversations about race, ethnicity, and gender – and has policy implications that figure to grow only more intense over time.

The early focus on perceived frontrunners also means more scrutiny on the words and records of those candidates. Just this week, Biden has fended off a criticism of his plans to combat global warming – a critique joined by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, an icon of the young and resurgent left. Likewise, bruising 2018 congressional primaries only wound up adding momentum to Democrats’ midterm wave last year. Concerns about establishment-vs.-grassroots fights faded amid the appeal of opposing the Trump agenda, in plenty of time for last November.

The depth of talent and experience is also real. Running for president as Democrats are seven senators and two former senators; seven current or former House members; three current or former governors; three mayors; an entrepreneur and a self-help guru, neither of whom have ever held elected office. Those facts speak to the immense demographic and ideological shifts at play inside a party still reeling from its shocking 2016 defeat. That’s evident in the candidates’ biographies and policy prescriptions, with far-reaching plans for health care, guns, the environment, and handling big tech companies moving to mainstream conversation.

rickklein All the blue ones look the same to me.

rickklein Ridiculous!

rickklein This is going to be pure comedy

rickklein Line up of uncivil degenerates.

rickklein Marianne Williamson may well be the most sane of the Democrats gapol TheDemocrats Democrats2020

rickklein Look at that list of bozos

rickklein 1 against 23!! People thought it was easy to win against Trump, or Democrats are with 23 different agendas? My guess is some of the candidates are not serious, they filed just to get free publicity. I don't think a guy like NYC mayor De Blasio will get 10 votes outside NYC.

rickklein One potato, two potato, three potato, four

rickklein But wait. Call now and the Dems can have a 24th candidate free. Just pay shipping and handling. StacyAbrams

rickklein

rickklein It seems to me that this is part of democracy, having a large number and wide variety of candidates. The pre-selection of candidates by party leadership, regardless of the wishes of the rank and file, makes a mockery of democracy.

rickklein A circus by the name of 'Democrat candidates'🤣

rickklein And just like wedding announcement season, the real winners are those who don't get the invite.

rickklein What a shit show

rickklein If the democrats had any sense 90% of them would humbly bow out and back a solid person who actually stands a chance to win against an incumbent con man.

rickklein

rickklein 0% chance.

rickklein With all of these candidates, no one screams vote for me.

rickklein

rickklein God damn how shitty the Democratic candidates are

rickklein While it’s good anybody can run, i feel like it’s muddling the field and dividing loyalties. If they want to defeat Trump, they need to rally behind 1 candidate.

rickklein Most of experience is between Joe & Bernie.

rickklein I'm nervous, frankly. But I hope the best candidate sorts itself out in the wash, for both sides.

He's a good candidate, but he (and Beto and Stacey Abrams) should run for Senate instead. No matter who wins presidency, Dems are screwed if they can't take back the Senate! What is so lucrative about running for Potus?

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock enters 2020 Democratic presidential raceHe won a state Trump carried by more than 20 points and touts his accomplishments working with a Republican-run legislature, offering Montana as a model. who? Steve who? Yeah, you know, him. That guy. In 2016, of ~580K votes cast, he got 50.3%. Lawyer, he stair-stepped his way thru Montana offices to become Gov. W/the exception of his support for Montana coal industry, I would put him in a crowded middle lane. Otherwise, who? From where?
