That sharp pain in the side has the potential to bringA side stitch, officially called exercise-related transient abdominal pain , refers to the often workout-ruining cramp in the side that many endurance athletes know all too well. While it can hit any kind of exerciser, people who run are especially prone to it: According to a 201570% of runners reported experiencing a side stitch in the year prior.

“ETAP is typically a sharp or stabbing pain that can be pinpointed to a particular area within the abdomen,”, Ph.D. an associate professor at Australia’s Avondale University who has extensively researched the side stitch, tells SELF. “It is most common in the upper abdomen, just below the rib cage.” In adult exercisers, it’s usually much more likely to hit on the right side, and it may also be associated with pain in the shoulder tip region.

There have been a few theories, though. Previously, experts believed an increase in physical activity led to a lack of blood flow to the diaphragm,they believed it had more to do with the stress placed on the ligaments that support our abdominal internal organs during exercise. But this didn’t explain the “sharp” or “stabbing” feeling, nor why it occasionally happens in the lower abdomen., most experts believe a simple bout of friction is responsible.
