Susie Yang studied pharmacy and began her career in tech, but always dreamed of writing a literary thriller. With her debut novel “White Ivy” coming out Nov. 3, soon to be adapted by Shonda Rhimes for Netflix, she shares the advice that changed her life.

In 2016, Susie Yang was living in San Francisco, spending her evenings bingeing Breaking Bad and House of Cards on Netflix, tinkering with the idea of writing a book. Soon, she may be bingeing her own show on Netflix. Her debut novel White Ivy, out November 3, is set to be adapted by Shonda Rhimes for the streaming giant after a seven-way auction.

Though Yang, 32, long wanted to write a novel, she had no idea how to start. She latched onto the idea of a Chinese-American anti-heroine, which she’d never seen reflected in pop...
