our worldly desires including things like shopping, or watching television — it’s a time very similar to that of Lent for Christians. This month is dedicated to feeding our souls through reading more, praying more, and being more patient and kind to everyone, while attaching ourselves more to God.
I was born and raised Muslim, and just as anyone born into something, there’s not too much of a choice on what you can or can't exclude yourself from — once youAs a teenager, waking up to have a pre-fast meal just before the sun rose was not at all appealing for obvious reasons.
The worst part was feeling like I could never voice my discomfort to anyone without ridicule or a minimal understanding of my plight. I always believed I was the sore thumb of my siblings, the one that always went against the grain. My siblings never expressed discomfort with fasting during Ramadan, so the idea of adding more to the list that made me the shame of the bunch just wasn’t in the cards.
Ramadan was a living nightmare for me as I navigated my identity because it always felt that, out of the millions of Muslims that existed in the world, I seemed to be the only one who just didn’t get it. I would pray, but the connection I thought I was supposed to feel was more like a short circuit., the Islamic prayer, is something that Muslims are prescribed to pray five times throughout the day, and increases when Ramadan comes around.
Being the best Muslim I could be was going to begin with simply being myself and having a willingness to learn because even though I was born into my faith, the education was always constant. I began to better discern that as a Muslim, my connection with God was a personal one. I strongly believed that if God did create all things, including struggle, that the names we refer to aswere also going to bring me ease in my journey of self discovery.
