House Bill 338 would allow people who were minors at the time of treatment to sue their doctor in the 20 years after receiving gender transition treatments or surgeries.

The latest digital headlines from Alaska's News Source.JUNEAU, Alaska - The House Judiciary Committee heard testimony Wednesday on HB338, a proposed bill that would change how gender-affirming care is given to minors in the state.

None of the lawmakers at Monday’s hearing — nor any testifiers heard Wednesday — gave proof that type of medical treatment is happening in Alaska. But testifier Katrina Mitchell reiterated that gender transition procedures are elective and that no one is forcing others to transition against their will.

Testifier Carol Rose supports the bill because of increased accountability for medical professionals providing gender-affirming care. Seneca Roach of Homer called the bill an attempt to discourage medical professionals from providing this type of health care, thus intervening in the lives of individuals. “Time and time again, Alaskans have stepped up, we’ve made it very clear we don’t want the government involved in our healthcare, yet here we are,” Whitman said.

Another parent of a trans child, Anchorage psychologist Lindsey Banning voiced strong opposition to the bill.
