HONG KONG - La police de Hong Kong a tiré dimanche des gaz lacrymogènes pour disperser plusieurs milliers de manifestations hostiles au projet de la Chine d’imposer directement sur place ses lois sur la sécurité.

Première manifestation depuis que Pékin a proposé jeudi ses lois sur la sécurité nationale, elles constituent un nouveau test pour le président chinois Xi Jingping, qui peine à étouffer l’opposition publique au renforcement de la main-mise chinoise sur le hub financier de Hong Kong. Les lois chinoises font aussi craindre pour l’avenir du compromis de 1997, “un pays, deux systèmes”, qui garantissait à Hong Kong d’importantes libertés, notamment pour la presse et le système judiciaire, lors de sa rétrocession à la Chine par la Grande-Bretagne.

La dispersion de la foule a rappelé les scènes chaotiques et parfois violentes observées l’an dernier lors des manifestions antigouvernementales qui ont réuni jusqu’à deux millions de personnes à Hong Kong.
