There are an estimated 7,800 people without a home in San Francisco, a city that has come to be seen as an emblem of California's staggering inability to counter the homeless crisis.

Two of the sweeps she experienced this year happened in the Castro neighborhood, where she noted that civil rights activists once stood up for marginalized peoples' rights. Now, residents and nearby businesses call the police on her.

Increasingly, advocates for people without housing are fighting back in court — as in the lawsuit filed in San Francisco, where the average monthly rent for a one-bedroom is $3,000. This year Tennessee made outdoor camping on public land a felony and in Portland, Oregon, the city council voted to create at least three large campsites and to ban all other tent encampments.

There are also informal requests for homeless people to move, like the one Solomon encountered, so it’s not possible to know the full scale of enforcement actions taken, or threatened to be taken, against people who are homeless.

Homelessness in San Francisco: talk of frustration, survivalSan Francisco officials say they offer shelter beds to homeless people before asking them to leave an encampment, as required by law. But unhoused people say the offers are vague and few, and sometimes not made at all. The offers include having to be sober. This isn’t a housing issue. Maybe get to work and do something useful. How about that? California's Congressional delegation could pool it's newfound millions (security funding) to build permanent housing. But that would be too much like right.

How San Francisco can get more people on the path to drug recoveryIn Opinion: There’s a quiet overdose statistic we need to say out loud. And a path to addressing it that San Francisco should implement. But can’t because of the federal grants that received. And getting around the “smoke free workplace” will be a bugger. Let's talk about something other than overdose statistics. Like clean sidewalks. Let us help you cut to the chase. San Francisco is not going to help anyone get into recovery by letting Healthright 360 open up any additional centers, whether or not they’re branded as recovery or not. Time to stop doing business with the CoH & time to re-evaluate contracts.
