‘His life was like a fairy tale’: slain Euclid officer Jacob Derbin’s mom reflects on son’s death as details about his killer emerge Euclid police officer Jacob Derbin was killed in the line of duty late Saturday night.CLEVELAND, Ohio – Hours after Jacob Derbin, a first-year Euclid police officer, was shot and killed by a suspect while responding to a domestic violence call Sunday, his mother sat in the driver’s seat of his truck.

Derbin’s death, which authorities say was the result of an ambush-style shooting carried out by 24-year-old Deshawn Vaughn, rocked the law enforcement community across the state and sparked an outpouring of messages from public officials, civic groups and even the Cleveland Cavaliers in honoring the fallen officer.

“I mean he was just super,” she said. “He was a rare human. He put people first. He was a dedicated public servant. He protected his family, his community, his country.” Dawn Derbin said she wants people to honor and remember first responders and military personnel like her son, emphasizing the importance of respecting their sacrifices.

In May 2022, Beachwood police arrested him on an Ohio Adult Parole Authority warrant. Two months later, Vaughn had an in-custody violation hearing and was issued a prison sanction term.At the time of the shooting, Vaughn was wanted on a bench warrant issued earlier this month after a judge found that he violated his parole because police suspected him in a crime that occurred May 6. The case was also referred to the U.S. Marshals’ Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force for investigation.

Elliott would not say which specific piece of evidence led officers to the apartment complex near Van Aken Boulevard and Lee Road on Sunday afternoon, but he said the resident was “associated with Vaughn.”
