A glove that translates sign language into speech in real time has been developed by scientists -- potentially allowing deaf people to communicate directly with anyone, without the need for a translator.

The wearable device contains sensors that run along the four fingers and thumb to identify each word, phrase or letter as it is made in American Sign Language. Those signals are then sent wirelessly to a smartphone, which translates them into spoken words at a rate of one word per second.Scientists at UCLA, where the project was developed, believe the innovation could allow for easier communication for deaf people.

Read MoreBetween 100,000 and 1 million people are estimated to use American Sign Language in the United States. The glove does not translate British Sign Language, the other dominant sign language in the English-speaking world, which is used by about 151,000 adults in the UK, according to the British Deaf Association.

This is wonderful. I love to see tech helping someone.

How is ASL not mandatory to learn in schools?

Here ya go CNN, your house is on fire 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂

It actually works they tested it on uk channel 5 gadget show

I feel like it would be easier to create an AI that can read what your signing from a camera and interprets

Is this not the Satanic High Sign? You people want to say the Okay finger sign as being a White Surpreme thing so why not ? STOP BEING A HYPOCRITE

Hope it's fast.

This is old and done by others years ago.

Brilliant! Extremely handy so to speak.

🖕 Translation?

This is really a welcomed development🤗.. Hope it come in app..

If it were developed by white scientists it will never see daylight because they are white and also it means nothing because deaf people are a minority that aren't included among the blm...yes this is strong sarcasm about reality.

Wow/ amazing

Now, that's a different way... 💕, 💩... 🧐🙄😂😂

Sooo...as long as they spell everything out letter by letter they're golden? Will it also transmit the facial expressions and body language, without which even the most proficient signing is the equivalent of mumbling?

Deaf people do not have a problem communicating, they have a problem understanding what hearing people are saying. How does this glove address that?

Thought it was a new Spider-Man technology or something when I seen the Spidey hand gesture😁😂

Why does it have the satan sign.

How dare they do black hand in this photo. Racist!

Still can’t beat this guy...from NYGovCuomo Comments on BLM protests and reactions humanelement

eblake981 This is so cool!

SethAbramson That's helpful!

Amazing!!

Now THAT’S awesome.

All I With the advanced technology we have, what on earth took so long?

Does the glove pick up on facial expressions enough to know the difference between “tomorrow”, “shy” and “prostitute” If not, it is useless.
