Millions of Americans see politics as a form of self-expression rather than as a mechanism for change. eitanhersh calls it 'political hobbyism.” “Emotion is the goal. It makes you feel connected to something without doing anything yourself.”

Many Americans feel an obligation to keep up with political news. But maybe we should be focusing our energies elsewhere. Political scientist Eitan Hersh says there's been a rise in "political hobbyism" in the United States. We treat politics like entertainment, following the latest updates like we follow our favorite sports teams. Instead, he says, we should think of politics as a way to acquire power and persuade our neighbors to back the issues we support.

vincentdonofrio eitanhersh Like you're a better person for being a fanatical (insert team name) football lover. I think I read this article Last week. Whatever gets you through the night.

eitanhersh Here’s real StructuralReform for ya, accomplished with simple TaxPolicy. Quickest & smoothest migration from EmployerSponsored HealthInsurance.

eitanhersh Makes a lot of sense.

eitanhersh Haven't read the book but be title of this tweet is so true. Talking to the most devout Bernie supporters is just as bad as talking to the most devout Trump supporters. Both are devoid of any facts that oppose their positions and use emotions as the ultimate rational.

eitanhersh This is why Trump won.

eitanhersh Interesting to listen to the podcast & purchase book only to see the author engaging in the same boring & tired narrative building he criticized. Maybe Bernie is doing well because he’s getting more grassroots participation & conventional wisdom about labels haven’t applied.

eitanhersh 😐

eitanhersh Identity politics are some of the oldest politics IMO

eitanhersh Very dominant with college age children. Got yer man bun and espresso, talk loud enough so others at Starbucks know you are wok.

eitanhersh Is voting nothing? Is contributing to candidates you support nothing? Is that a game? Maybe I want change from today, but not radicalism. Is that just a form of self expression, or are you navel gazing?

eitanhersh Soooo NOT TRUE!! They feel powerless -even though they vote -once the elected takes control they have have zero power of what they do... politics a dirty individualistic game... Election2020 scariest in history

eitanhersh Disagree, politics are maddening, baffling and scary as hell. We see way to much of what really goes on, knowing there is so much more hidden.

eitanhersh

eitanhersh This is truth. A lot of whites are guilty of doing so.

eitanhersh Political posturing and would-be poll-answering.

eitanhersh What we need is to get rid of all these people trying to bring trump down and let him make all the decisions by himself! MAGA2020 TrumpAutocracy
