Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine has unleashed an outpouring of condemnation from scientists and research organizations worldwide. Some organizations in Western nations have moved to quickly sever links with Russia—cutting off funding and resources and ending collaborations with Russian scientists. And from Mauritius to Latvia, national science academies and groups of researchers have issued statements sharply criticizing the conflict and supporting their Ukrainian colleagues.
The chorus of condemnation includes the voices of thousands of scientists in Russia, who say that they are appalled by their government’s actions. In a letter organized by researchers in Russia and signed by more than 5,000 people, scientists strongly condemn the hostilities and say that the Russian leadership has launched a unjustifiable war for the sake of its “geopolitical ambitions”.
The mood among colleagues in Russia is “terrible”, he says. “Nobody thought it would come as far as direct invasion,” he says. “Nobody thought that Russia would attack Kyiv.” Gelfand says that he hopes there is a way that general sanctions don’t harm individual scientists, many of whom publicly oppose the war.
Total boycott Ukrainian scientists, meanwhile, are rallying to convince international organizations to take stronger action against Russia. More than 130 people have signed an open letter to the European Commission and member states of the European Union calling for an urgent suspension of all funding to, and international collaboration with, Russian institutions.
I did not expect to see scientific racism, but you're American so that explains it. My brother signed our protest letter, and publicly renounced Putin's actions. I have not seen or spoken to him and his family for 4 days, they vanished. But you racists want to punish him more 🙄

Boycotting the Russian state is one thing. But don't blame every Russian scientist for this war! Most of them are opposed to it. People don't want war. Politicians start it.😰 We need to keep communicating through science. Only communication can avoid or solve conflicts.
What do you think those Russian academics will think? Will they align with Putin or with West? West is cultivating more animosity than is needed.
Seems like there isn't that much science coming out of Russia (speaking relatively, about significant outputs and I may be wrong). What about building conditions for cooperation? 'Not having voted for and voting for Putin/his party' seems both insufficient and unfeasible.
Why also not boycott American academic community? For the wars in Somalia, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan..and so many other countries? What a fucking hypocrisy! You should be ashamed!
This is racist. If a Russian helps achieving fusion, or cure cancer, stopping her work is not going to help the world. Don’t forget Putin first took hostage of the Russians. Don’t assume there is a democracy in Russia.

This is why I left academia for the private sector, it's too narrow minded, short sighted, and petty. Punishing Russian scientists, many who have protested Putin & the war in Ukraine at the risk of their livelihoods and safety, simply by association, is something to be ashamed of
Send all Russian college students in the US back to Russia…cancel all scientific cooperation, stop all cultural exchanges, send all Russian tourists home…boycott all Russian products.

Science exist beyond borders and ideology. As scientists, we are guardians of the truth. Evidence backed truth. There is no place for politics in science. The only way to expand our knowledge is peaceful cooperation. Not silencing regimes victims.

I can see reason for this anger. But just wondering about Aryan scientists- why no such righteous indignation when China govt unleashed a deadly pandemic with its irresponsible behavior and many of its officials & scientists were clearly dissimulating?

Science is not like a sport, where individuals & teams compete for the greater glory of their country. Russian scientists tend to represent science, not Russia.
