Germany prolonged on Tuesday night its lockdown that has been in force since November and introduced even stricter measures amid concerns about the spread of a new and more infectious coronavirus variant

.

Chancellor Angela Merkel and the premiers of Germany's 16 states met and decided to extend existing restrictions until Feb. 14, including closures of some businesses and schools as well as curbs on social interaction, sports and entertainment. Surgical masks and so-called N95 respirators were made mandatory for entering shops and public transport. Plain cloth masks and face coverings will no longer be sufficient.

Employers will be pressed to allow working from home whenever possible, after health-care authorities said the virus was likely spreading in workplaces. Authorities said that the number of commuters and other passengers in public transport, which was identified as another possible source of contagion, should be reduced by allowing more people to work from home, introducing shifts and increasing the number of trains and buses.
