The presidential election, less than six months away, is on the minds of Americans.

FILE - Patrons of the Gallatin County Fairgrounds wait in line to cast their ballots in Bozeman, Mont., Nov. 3, 2020. said Monday that its recent survey found 71% of Americans have given “quite a lot” of thought to the upcoming election. The attention folks are paying to the current election at this stage is on par with survey results in 2008 and 2020, both of which ended with fairly strong voter turnout s.

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have their bids secured, though their nominations won’t be official until the party conventions are held this summer.“That's pushing the campaign into the news in a way that it wouldn't otherwise be in most normal elections,” he said.

“But I still think we're going to have a high turnout rate,” Belt said. “I don't know if it's going to match the historically high turnout of 2020, but I expect it to be pretty close.”In addition to Trump’s trials, there are concerns over Biden’s age, the curiosity of third-party spoilers, and the dynamic of a rematch of four years ago. Not only is it a rematch, but it’s a rematch of two men who have served in the Oval Office.

Add in questions about whether young voters will turn out for Biden and whether Nikki Haley supporters “come home to the Republican Party” this fall, and this is really shaping up to be a different kind of race, Belt said. Gallup said 84% of Democrats and 78% of Republicans have given the presidential election a lot of thought.“Because one of the things that incumbents have to do is they have to turn out their electoral coalition and build on it, because you usually have some slide off of supporters as you lose public approval over time,” Belt said. “You have to backfill that in order to get reelection.
