The tension between communities and law enforcement seems to have worsened in recent years. Future for Felons is a local group that produced two community-uniting events.
Pastor Ime Elugbe said that recent years of unrest started with the murder of George Floyd. It was then he realized something needed to be done to unite, rather than divide. “There was distrust between the community and law enforcement and we thought of a way to build back that trust,” Pastor Elugbe said.
A large part of the social justice and equality presentation was about seeing others around you as equal, regardless of any differences you may have. “If you are well off and live in a big sprawling mansion or maybe you’re homeless. Your value doesn’t change. Your self worth doesn’t change,” Pastor Elugbe said.
The second part of the Future for Felons event was free JET rides. An event that started last year was used as a way to have people that wouldn’t typically take the bus to do so, and interact with others in the community. “What’s going to happen is you will meet with everyday people who you otherwise would never come across,” Pastor Elugbe said.
Future for Felons looks to make both free JET rides as well as Social Justice Awareness Day a traditional event.
