The police chief in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, has been removed from his job following outrage after body camera footage was released that showed officers firing rubber bullets and laughing at protesters on May 31—actions the chief later defended

Thursday said that the Ft. Lauderdale city manager decided that Police Chief Rick Maglione would be removed.showed officers laughing and celebrating after firing rubber bullets at protesters, leading to the Police Department reviewing footage and later releasing furtherOne of the officers can be heard in the video saying “Did you see me f—k up those mother——rs,” before laughter is heard.

The officers apparently thought their body cameras were off, with one of the officers checking with another to see if his camera was recording before making the comments. Maglione recently defended the actions of the officers, and has expressed frustration with an outspoken protester who was shot in the face during the encounter.

LaToya Ratlieff, who was demonstrating peacefully, required 20 stitches after a rubber bullet hit her in the face, causing a gash and fracturing her right eye socket; she’s since made numerous media appearances and spoken before a congressional subcommittee on police violence, but local authorities have said she’s declined to give a formal statement for an investigation.

If they did nothing wrong, as suggested, then whether the bodycam was recording should have been a non-issue. Rather, he knew in the moment that what he had done was wrong. Hope she can take civil action against that officer.
