” beat box office expectations. For theater owners, however, the victory comes at a time when moviegoing remains severely hindered by the pandemic.
Few box office experts would have been bold enough to predict “Free Guy” would have a better start than “The Suicide Squad,” which opened last weekend in the U.S. and Canada to $26 million. The Warner Bros. film was made available on HBO Max on the same day as its theatrical debut, unlike “Free Guy,” which is playing only in theaters for its first 45 days of release.
Already, Disney reportedly told Reynolds to plan for a sequel. “Aaaannnnd after 3 years messaging #FreeGuy as an original IP movie, Disney confirmed today they officially want a sequel. Woo hoo! #irony,”Disney may be popping a celebratory bottle of champagne, but movie theater operators are facing a dire situation. The box office recovery has come in fits and starts, and it has been a mostly homogenous demographic showing up to the movies.
Films catered to older adults haven’t been pulling in strong sales either. Consider this weekend’s other new nationwide releases: MGM’s Aretha Franklin biopic “Respect” and Sony’s horror sequel “Don’t Breathe 2.” The former earned $9 million from 3,207 venues in its debut and the latter barely cracked $10 million from 3,005 locations; figures that were expected given the circumstances but would be disappointing in any other environment.
Western exhibitors have big problems due to being no plan or strategy behind how they would deal with COVID even though they had a massive advantage could see how China and Asia dealt with it and had an ace in the hole 2011's Contagion film as a guide to what to expect happen
as long they stay the course it will recover the Big Wigs should expect low returns it should be better at years end and 2022
Suicide Squad is horrible and much like the first but worse. At least Free Guy is original. That in itself gives it an advantage over Squad
Free Guy makes 28 million, SUCCESS! Suicide Squad makes 26 million, FAILURE!
FreeGuy beat BO expectations only because they have been lowballed after a year of soft openings in normal circumstances it would be opening more than double but problem is even with Free Guy 71% under 34 until exhibitors can get 35+ back nothing is going to change
Stream it already. FL is a hotspot and smart folks are not headed to theaters right now.
I still have no desire to see it but I will later this week. First I'll see RespectMovie 🎙️
No shit as long as covid restrictions are in place how do you think theatres are going to survive?
