Despite concerns the delta variant would keep moviegoers at home, Ryan Reynolds’ sci-fi action comedy “and 20th Century Studios, collected $26 million from 4,165 North American theaters. Given its production budget above $100 million, those ticket sales wouldn’t be much to celebrate in pre-pandemic times, but isn’t a bad result as a plague sweeps the globe.
David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research, says “Free Guy” had “a very good opening under difficult conditions.” Still, he points out, the movie business isn’t close to returning to normalcy because COVID-19 cases continue to surge and vaccination efforts have slowed.
This weekend’s other new nationwide releases, Sony’s thriller “Don’t Breathe 2” and MGM’s Aretha Franklin biopic “Respect,” each arrived in line with expectations, though neither did much to galvanize ticket buyers.
Looks like it proves exclusively in theaters or streaming as well doesn't make much difference. Not a pre-pandemic opening, not bigger than most recent 1 films...
It seems it's passing with flying colors.
rebeccaarubin How could you say that Free Guy did better than Jungle Cruise and Space Jam 2 when those films had better opening weekends than Free Guy? Do your reporters actually check the tables?
Gunn keeps flopping
Not sure why people are pitting movies box offices against each other like they’re getting some of it. Why would anyone celebrate SS and Free Guy not going gangbusters at the box office? Is it a Disney v WB thing? IF so that’s pretty pathetic
PG 13 film theater exclusive did under TSS opening which was R rated and HBO Max exclusive Proof that there is Pandemic excuse exists
VancityReynolds is the fu€king bomb, so no surprise to me. In fact, I’ve a dinner and movie planned just to see it. 😎
And this is just the Domestic/US Box office. I pretty impress for Free Guy
I'll wait for the second weekend, experts set the lowest bar for this movie was 30 million and it didn't make that domestically
It’s because of a new narrative instead of a sequel, spin-off or reboot.
I’m hyped to see how much TSS drops
Great news, so happy for Jodie!!!
Looks like this pandemic only affected TheSuicideSquad 🤔
More than TheSuicideSquad 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😳😳😳😳😳 What an unmitigated DISASTER for wbpictures hbomax James Gunn delivered the BIGGEST FLOP of all DCEU movies.. This is what happens when studio doesn't listen to fans!!!!
For my Opinion 28.4 Million is a strong one despite there is delta Variant surge although it is still small because the Production budget is 100-125 Million this film needed to gross over 250 Million+ order to break even.
gunn squad bust. 'but but but covid' 🤣🤣🤣🤣
CGasparino seems pretty obvious movie theatres arn’t dead. It’s also obvious you suffer from an addicting habit of spreading miss information. You’re charracteristics and blatant lies are soon obsolete. I’m sorry for FoxNews to keep putting up with this man.
I saw DontBreathe . I'll see that Guy movie next week. I really have no interest in it but having no expect I'm sure to not be disappointed
thats good but its needs to do well in its second week
Seeing high budget of $100-130M (without marketing), this is decent opening but movie need to keep up with the number and avoid from big weekend drops to do good at BO. If it passes in doing this, it will open window for other movies to release theatre exclusive.
