A conversation with John Bucknell and Dr. Edward Tate reveals how they're making space-based solar power — a 100-year-old tech — a reality.

“I am an aerospace engineer by training… I was the lead developer for the Raptor rocket engine at SpaceX,” Bucknell says.

The idea is that you can then distribute this energy to ground stations anytime, anywhere, in any weather.Tate highlights that when it comes to wireless power transmission, we often think about charging our phones on a. However, “Every day, wireless power transfers from the Sun to the Earth,” he explains.

“A rectenna is kind of this magic device,” Tate highlights. It’s like an antenna with another circuit added to it that can convert RF into something usable.” He emphasizes that it’s this constant exposure to the Sun that sets space-based solar power apart from terrestrial alternatives. On the subject of the world, Tate points out that those of us who live in the West actually have a very high standard of energy.

The orbits where there is debris around the Earth are generally about two thousand kilometers in altitude, and the highest concentration is about eleven hundred kilometers,” Bucknell explains.
