SNAP benefits are paid to low and no-income households in need of financial assistance to pay for groceries. Households qualify for benefits if their net monthly income is at or below 100% of the federal poverty level, and benefits typically are allotted over a 12-month period. Funds are loaded onto electronic benefit transfer cards, and funds can be used at participating stores including major chains such as Walmart and Costco.
While 35 states and territories will pay out recipients on June 1, some residents in these states won’t see their benefits hit until as late as June 28, such as in Florida. Each state manages and distributes the benefits differently. Some states make payments depending on a claimant’s number, and others pay them out according to the first letter of their last name. Some of the smaller states will be able to send out all SNAP payments on the same day.
In April 2023, 12.5% of the U.S. population received SNAP benefits. The 2024 Farm Bill seeks to expand SNAP benefits to convicted drug felons and allow incarcerated individuals to apply within 30 days of their release from prison.Alaska: June 1District of Columbia: June 1 to 10Iowa: June 1 to 10Missouri: June 1 to 22New York: June 1 to 9South Carolina: June 1 to 19Washington: June 1 to 20
