Dana Baiocco, who works for the Consumer Product Safety Commission, told USA TODAY she reached out to several fireworks trade associations and was told sales have 'definitely increased for consumer fireworks.'

In Milwaukee, complaints about fireworks have grown more than 600% as people report hearing periodic small explosions, reported the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, part of the USA TODAY Network.

William Weimer, vice president of Phantom Fireworks, told USA TODAY that despite COVID-19 closures until late May, the fireworks seller had the"strongest early season sales we've ever had in our company's history." The boom in Phantom's sales, however, started about two weeks before the protests, said Weimer, dismissing such a theory.

He attributed the boom to three factors: People are anxious to get out of their houses,"there's not a whole lot to do," and that many municipal shows have been canceled.
