Walker, nativo de Mississippi, estudió la secundaria en Benton Harbor, Michigan antes de convertirse en jugador colegial de Bradley University en Peoria, Illinois. Walker fue seleccionado por Syracuse en la segunda ronda del Draft 1962. En su primera campaña con los Nationals promedió 12,3 puntos antes de que el equipo se mudará a Filadelfia y cambiaran su nombre a 76ers. En su quinta campaña promedió 19,3 unidades y 8,1 rebotes en 81 encuentros.
