Montclair restaurants are coming off a strong week thanks to Valentine’s Day. From cozy cafes to candlelit bistros, people chose to dine out on the symbolic day of love and companionship.

Chef Reuben Ramos, above in back, has teamed up at Taps and Takeout in Oakland’s Montclair district with his daughter, from left, Maria Ramos; wife, Rosa Pedroza; and mother-in-law, Lupita Pedroza, to make dozens of made-to-order, premium jumbo veggie, pork and chicken tamales every Sunday.

“They’re close to being a pound each,” says Rosa, who adds that Lupita is using a family recipe from her great grandmother, who was in the Mexican Revolutionary War and had to help feed millions of soldiers before handing down the recipe to Rosa’s mother. Marketing manager Isabella Linares says they also use the giant piles of bramble to hide additional food in.
