Former Cleveland police officer Timothy Loehmann, who fatally shot 12-year-old Tamir Rice in 2014, was hired as a patrolman by White Sulphur Springs police.

A rally was held at Public square in downtown Cleveland, June 25, 2021, for justice in the Tamir Rice killing. The rally comes weeks after the Justice Department dropped the case against two Cleveland police officers for the 2014 killing of the 12-year-old. Today would have been Tamir’s 19th birthday.

White Sulfur Springs Police Chief D.S. Teubert confirmed he hired Loehmann. He said he spent about a year looking into Loehmann’s background, including watching videos and reading about Tamir’s shooting before deciding to hire him. The shooting of Tamir sparked a national outcry after video showed Loehmann shot the boy within seconds of arriving at Cudell Recreation Center.
