Former Cleveland Heights students sued the school district, accusing officials of ignoring their reports of sexual assault and harassment by other students.CLEVELAND, Ohio — Five former Cleveland Heights-University Heights students have accused the school district of ignoring sexual assaults and incidents of sexual harassment reported to officials.
District Superintendent Elizabeth Kirby said in a statement that the district takes the accusations seriously and that it respects parents’“Our commitment is steadfast in responding promptly, effectively and equitably to all reports of sexual misconduct, and we are determined to make our school the safe, welcoming facility we all want and deserve,” Kirby’s statement said.
A former Roxboro student said in the lawsuit that when she reported being sexually assaulted at age 11 in 2016, a school counselor asked whether the encounter was consensual. The girl didn’t know the meaning of the word at the time and felt pressured to say it was. The same classmate was also accused of assaulting two other students, according to the lawsuit. Instead of conducting an investigation, the school responded by “shaming” the victims, the filing said.
In 2019, a high school freshman reported that a sophomore, who was a multisport athlete and whose mother was a district employee, raped her at the boy’s home, according to the lawsuit.
