Fans have theorized that Ash Williams and Freddy Krueger occupy the same fictional universe, but Evil Dead Rise debunks any Elm Street crossovers.

A long-standing theory that suggests both Nightmare on Elm Street and The Evil Dead take place in a shared universe has been further debunked by Evil Dead Rise. Directed by Lee Cronin and executive produced by Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell, Evil Dead Rise reboots the franchise with a new protagonist, Beth . Rise sees the franchise's third Necronomicon raise literal hell in a Los Angeles apartment block after it's rediscovered by Beth's nephew Danny.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Evil Dead Rise brings back Bruce Campbell alongside references to the work of Wes Craven. Sam Raimi has included several references to the legendary horror director in his Evil Dead movies, from The Evil Dead's The Hills Have Eyes poster to Freddy Krueger's glove in Evil Dead 2.

However, Evil Dead Rise makes it clear that Nightmare on Elm Street is just a movie and not a side effect of Ash and his friends' carelessness with the Book of the Dead. Before everything goes horribly wrong, Bridget's besotted neighbor Jake comes by to invite her round to watch "all the Freddy movies in a row". This places the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise in the same fictional territory that The Evil Dead occupied in Wes Craven's original movie.

Why The Evil Dead Franchise Has So Many Freddy Krueger Easter Eggs The Freddy Krueger Easter eggs in the Evil Dead franchise are nothing more than tributes from one legendary horror filmmaker to another. To acknowledge Sam Raimi's inclusion of a poster of The Hills Have Eyes in The Evil Dead, Craven had Nancy stick on the Raimi movie while trying to stay awake.

If it had been made, the Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash crossover movie would have changed all this, but it was hamstrung by New Line's refusal to let Ash kill the two horror icons. Since the three horror characters never crossed paths, the Freddy Krueger Easter eggs in the Evil Dead franchise remain as heartfelt tributes to Craven. Prior to Evil Dead Rise's appropriately all-night-long Freddy Krueger marathon, the last nod to Craven's legendary creation was in Ash vs.
