ROME - The European Commission could impose a 3 billion euro fine on Italy for breaking EU rules due to its rising debt and structural deficit levels, the country’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini said on Tuesday. Salvini, whose far-right League party triumphed in European elections on Sunday, said he would use “all my energies” to fight what he said were outdated and unfair European fiscal rules.See more stories
Two euro zone officials told Reuters on Monday that Brussels was likely to start disciplinary steps against Italy on June 5 over its public finances.“Let’s see if we get this letter where they give us a fine for debt accumulated over the past and tell us to pay 3 billion euros,” Salvini said in an interview with RTL radio.

lofdedge And that would solve the problem will it. Always the same, once in debt. Keep them in debt
Okay....that's makes no sense. Riddle me this, how do you fine someone such a large sum of money for being in debt when they can't pay to pay your fine🤔
EU are supposed to help countries not hinder there progress. Fining makes their problem worse. Eu did same with Greece.
Salvini is out of order. The EU has rules for the long term benefit of all members, and when it lends money it has conditions because guess what, that money came from everyone else in Europe. It's like someone borrowing money from their family to go and get hammered every night.
Cf. Article 126, Lisbonne Treaty, 2008.
Add more debt for having to much debt.
‘could’ what sort of perverse powers have we afforded the EU .. bloody typical BREXIT ITEXIT
Reduced to 1.5 billion if paid in 14 days
Why stay in the EU prison? Let Italy go!
being in the EU sounds like it sucks
Drowning man receives anvil to assist.....
This is what happens when you give up your monetary sovereignty and why the EU is ultimately doomed as constructed
Its almost as if far right leaders aren’t just horrible people, they also suck at finance and economics 🙃
Yeah! Come on, let's fine us! It will be nice having the 51% in the next General Elections. ;) (Meanwhile Deutschebank is blowing up and France's public debt is growing fast)
gordon_plockton
JimSpenceSport 'could'
What if we refuse to pay? You put a fine on the fine? And what if we still refuse to pay?
so basically EU = loan shark.
Non more money to usurious Leurope
That will make Italy's debt problem even worse. No wonder countries want to leave the EU.
That will help them to sort their debt.
Doesn’t one usually slap huge fines on entities for having too much money, rather than too little?
VAT is 20%, income taxes are about 40%.. they need to pay more!
How do you punish a country in debt........ you push them further into debt. Itexit is looking good now.
That would not seem to help the problem.
A large fine is a stupid way to do this. Get rid of Juncker. he's a criminal.
EUROPA braucht matteosalvinimi nicht . Rechtsnational keine Zukunft
Yes because that's really going to help a country that had a lot of debt And they wonder why countries want to leave the EU 😒
The EU can take a flying leap!!
Italy can ask the Cosa Nostra for a bailout.
That's EU CARE! Twisted...
