ERCOT has uped minimum operating reserves to better handle emergencies, adjusting alert levels to 2,500 MW, 2,000 MW, and 1,500 MW, likely causing more alerts during extreme weather.
“Demand keeps growing,” said Ed Hirs, Energy Fellow at the University of Houston. “When they ran some computer simulations on the grid they found that they had some challenges keeping the grid stable unless they had a greater amount of electricity capacity kept off the to the side.” “It means that for a summer like we just had we’re going to hear a lot more calls for conservation because they will bump into these reserve requirements and minimum thresholds much more frequently,” said Hirs.
This winter, ERCOT will trigger emergency alerts when the megawatt amount in operating reserves drops below the new, higher thresholds.
