The March 5 Texas primaries are over, but the election drama is just beginning heading into May runoffs and November's general election.

Republican presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump, left, shakes hands with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott after receiving Abbott's endorsement at the South Texas International Airport on Nov. 19, 2023, in Edinburg. The Republican power struggle for control of the Texas House casts a bright light on the upcoming overtime period for the 2024 primaries.

Though Cruz is the favorite to win reelection by turning out his conservative base in a state dominated by Republican voters, he’s also reaching for independents and others who in the past voted for Democrats. In Texas it’s difficult for most statewide candidates to appeal beyond their established political strongholds, so it will be interesting to see which Senate candidate is best at siphoning off the other’s natural support base.

The critical runoff race is House Speaker Dade Phelan’s fight for survival in House District 21. The Beaumont Republican ended the March 5 primary 3 percentage points and 1,032 votes behind David Covey, who is endorsed by former President Donald Trump, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Paxton.Rep. Morgan Meyer, R-University Park, left, talks to Speaker Dade Phelan on the first day of the first special session in the House on May 30, 2023.
