Dozens of community members and parents attended the Revere Local Schools’ monthly board meeting Tuesday to protest the district’s released-time policy for religious instruction and potential agreement with LifeWise Academy to offer off-site Bible-based religious instruction to students during school hours.

Claudia Hower, a retired teacher and former Revere board member, shares her concerns about the district’s released-time policy for religious instruction and potential partnership with LifeWise Academy at the district’s board meeting on Tuesday.

“We were informed that there was a petition of ‘over 150 people’ interested in LifeWise. We requested that information and found that it was actually closer to 90, many of whom do not live in the district,” Jimerson said. “LifeWise lessons teach that divorce is a sin, as is cohabitation and anything pertaining to the LGBTQ community,” she said. “As a community there is a great concern that this will cause a divide between students, staff and parents.”

Board President Keith Malick reminded attendees that the chief function of a board is policy making and that application of policy is an administrative task to be performed by the superintendent and treasurer and his or her staff, who become responsible for the effective communication and supervision of the entire school system.

“You said Copley and Hudson are on the list but they don’t have the same policy we do. Under Revere’s policy, anyone who takes attendance and has liability insurance and has a bus can pull up in front and take kids away,” Jeffrey Archinal said. “Whereas Hudson’s policy says they are limited to 120 minutes. Copley’s policy says that kids are forbidden to go evangelize at school. And it’s that piece, that piece about LifeWise that it’s not just parental choice. This is not about church being bad.
