During a board meeting Wednesday night, Seattle Public Schools proposed closing approximately 20 elementary schools , which could take effect as early as the 2025-26 school year .According to SPS, elementary schools were only at 65% capacity, and the new plan would increase the school utilization to 85%.
The district said part of the plan would consolidate 70 elementary schools to 50. According to SPS, 29 schools have fewer than 300 students. Seattle Public School's superintendent, Brent Jones, planned to ask the board on Wednesday for permission to start drafting a school closure plan. If given the green light, Jones and his staff are expected to draw up a preliminary list of about 20 schools that could be closed or consolidated.
If the School Board says no to closures and consolidations, the district said they will have to make additional changes to how it operates, including increasing student-teacher ratios, reducing staff, and eliminating preschool.Stay Connected
