Doodle Drive-In: Dogs, drinks and doodles in a relaxing retro vibe

offers a casual, relaxed patio, a peaceful bubbling fountain and a calm setting to hang out, take in the sun and enjoy a specially made nosh.Laura and Mike Grguric bought Retro Dog, which was around for eight years before becoming a casualty of the coronavirus pandemic, and turned it into Doodle Drive-In. The carhop-pooch centric eatery with everything from beer to burgers and more has a Cuyahoga Falls zip code but is on the Stow border.

Doodle has a double meaning: Doodle, as in the hypoallergenic poodle and lab mix, and doodle as in quick artistic sketches we’ve all done in school and while on hold on the phone. The pawtio – that does have a fun ring, eh? – has a recently constructed gazebo. Large chess pieces are lined up on a board on the ground. A fountain is low and perfect for dogs. A Connect 4 game is available, and music is piped into the artificial-turf covered space.

Interior artwork décor is doodles – lots of them. Customers find their inner Picasso, sketch their masterpiece and leave it in a basket. Most are dogs. But peruse the walls and you’ll find a chicken, a salamander and a stray cat or two. And Grguric frames every one. “I wanted it to be a place where kids could come after school and have a place to hang out,” she said.

Top-selling item are the burgers, which are handmade patties – not frozen. Only fries and tater tots are frozen; even onion rings are hand-breaded, she said. Chicken tenders are the second-most popular item. Cornbread is homemade, along with cheese sauces. And Doodle offers beef bacon for those who don’t eat pork.
