Charges include defrauding federal health agencies and violating federal kickback laws for inducing doctors to prescribe powerful opioids, such as OxyContin.
The Sacklers, the wealthy family that controls the company, will separately pay $225 million to resolve civil claims. "We reached today’s agreement in order to facilitate a global resolution that directs substantial funding to communities in need, rather than to years of legal proceedings," the statement continued.Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey A. Rosen holds a news conference to announce the results of the global resolution of criminal and civil investigations with an opioid manufacturer at the Justice Department in Washington, D.C., Oct. 21, 2020.
"This resolution does not provide anybody with a pass on the criminal side," said Rachel Honig, an assistant U.S. attorney in New Jersey. "The department will not relent to combat the opioid problem," Deputy Attorney General Jeffery Rosen said at a press conference on Wednesday.
And who gets the money? Does the family get compensated?
Purdue Pharmacy just has to write a check after what they did? They paid doctors to prescribe oxy, gave bonuses to doctors who wrote the most prescriptions, they lied about the dangers of the drug, over 400,000 dead and countless more addicted and suffering. They belong in jail.
I've asked before, who will manage the $8B to ensure it doesn't get distributed amongst the grifters? I don't trust these vultures currently running the DOJ and the WH. I bet they're creaming their pants thinking that's their money.
Limited liability entities. What a scam..
The judgement in this case does not fit the crime. This company basically committed mass murder. A monetary settlement is no where near enough. Criminal charges should be held for those responsible.
People need to take responsibility for continuing to take the meds. The problem years ago is pain clinics weren’t regulated. Doctors prescribed these meds to make money knowing full well they were feeding addicts. I never became addicted in over 20yrs on these meds.
White people taking pills is the company's fault. Black people smoking crack is a black cultural problem. thisisAmerica
Nice. How about sending the executives to prison?
But no jail time for anyone, cost of doing business I guess... 🤨
Not nearly enough
They’re are still gonna make billions from the drug that cures OxyContin addiction.
Anyone in a board position or ownership should be sentenced to jail and every single dollar profit returned to the families who lost a loved one.
pennies to what they've made in the past 6 months alone, but pat yourselves on the back anyways :(
Not big enough punishment!
check this out it helpful
But how much did they make off of it? The fine should be more than that.
I guess they only get to keep 2 billion from their drug empire. My neighbours agree that's sooooo fair.
what about who owned the company?
