Many people have preconceived notions about different dog breeds’ behavioral quirks. Golden retrievers are seen as playful and affectionate, and pit bulls can be viewed as hostile and aggressive. Chihuahuas are labeled yappy and temperamental, whereas bulldogs are described as easygoing and sociable.
To determine the impact of breed on behavior, Morrill and her co-authors surveyed the owners of 18,385 dogs on Darwin’s Ark, a community science initiative where people can report their pet’s behaviors. For this project, the researchers asked the owners more than 100 questions relating to everything from a dog’s physical size and color to its sociability and lifestyle.
After running the survey data and sequenced DNA through a battery of statistical analyses, Morrill and her co-authors identified 11 genetic regions strongly associated with dog behavior, such as howling frequency and sociability with humans. But none of these behavioral regions was specific to any one of the 78 breeds examined in the study.
A dog’s sex and age turned out to be a better indicator for certain traits, such as bathroom habits or level of toy interaction, though not most of them. “People hold very strong beliefs that dog breeds are different in their behavior, but I think we have to just accept that sometimes those differences aren’t so extreme,” Morrill says.

Scientific American has really dropped off in recent years.
'A dog’s sex and age turned out to be a better indicator for certain traits, such as bathroom habits or level of toy interaction...' this is strongly true for humans as well. 🤷 Cool study, though not much surprised me. I'm a huge fan of nurture over nature in general.
I dunno, I've never met a GSD that didn't bond strongly to one person and become a needy, velcro dog. 🤣 That said, they've also all been independent enough to not cause trouble if left alone and no separation anxiety, which is likely from training, not personality.
No their not, their chosen on how the owner brings the breed up.
Every chihuahua I’ve ever met was a real shit-lord. Not very scientific, I know.
Bullshit
sure
I have no facts to backup my claim but i call BS on this one.
Somewhere I think science is still getting it wrong! Bcoz I know thru experience that if dogs like pitbull are not trained from childhood to stay calm, they most go crazy when they grow up!
I already knew that. 😆
Dismisinfo
I beg to differ. Dogs are genetically manipulated for specific jobs. They have certain traits that are bred for over generations, mostly surrounding prey drive. Various levels of prey drive in hunting and herding breeds for instance. They want retrievers to hunt not bite. Gentle
While people should lean less on perceived breed traits, I wish the article opened the study more on more general breed traits. Labs being barky is hardly a breed trait, but for example do huskies have a high prey drive, do collies want to herd, etc?
As clearly demonstrated by thugs walking their vicious Chihuahuas 🙄 Oh wait ..
❤️
I’d rather get bitten by an angry Yorkshire terrier than an angry pit bull
… oh, you mean like humans … ( +/- ? ) …
Individually maybe, generically yes the breed shares undeniable common traits through its members.
And old studies showed that smoking was good exercise for the lungs. I believe that as much as I do this. Yes nurture has a huge part to play, but nature is the biggest variable.
The picture is of a Sheba. Having met one I have to say her behaviour pretty exactly corresponded to the breed stereotype. More like a cat than a dog
lame take atheist!
Very misleading. In the actual study, they're looking at dog breeds that were created in the last 160 yrs. They do say that things like biddability (working dogs) do show a strong correlation to older breeds that were bred for a purpose. 1/
As a student of Evolution,my take is more universal. The traits (knowledge/attributes) of any species including Homo sapiens follow a hopping sequence. 1st it resides in brain(Random Access Memory) & then gradually 'saved' in DNA(hard disk). jack_tamisiea
From my own personal experience I find little that I can agree with in this article. Certainly breed isn’t the final word on personality but it absolutely starts the conversation
I call BS
