Disneyland fans, cast members protest park closure: 'Tell the guards to open up the gates'

Disneyland has been closed since March because of the coronavirus pandemic, while Walt Disney World in Florida reopened with reduced capacity in July. The U.S. has reported more than 8.1 million cases and 219,500 deaths, according to"Cast members don't want to lose their dream jobs," Natasha Ramirez, co-organizer for the protest, told USA TODAY.

Ramirez, a former cast member, launched the protest along with Desi d'Amani, who was one of the thousands of Disney workers laid off last month. It began with the two of them inviting a few fellow cast members to hearing support from thousands of people through a Facebook event. The pronouncement marked a turnabout from last month, when Newsom said he expected the guidelines to be issued "very, very shortly" as the state negotiated with the industry.

A trade group representing theme parks, the California Attractions and Parks Association, said there's no reason for the attractions to remain closed when there's ample evidence they can reopen safely.
