Breaking down Disney's gamble opening Mulan on Disney Plus

citing NBCUniversal chief Jeff Shell. The Journal further calculated that, based on a retention of roughly 80% of digital rental fees, “Trolls World Tour” had likely grossed nearly $100 million from nearly 5 million in rentals.

Finally, let’s do some rather unforgiving math. If “Mulan” equaled “Trolls World Tour’s” purportedly record-setting debut — bearing in mind that “Mulan” costs $10 more per rental than “Trolls World Tour” did, on top of the Disney Plus subscription fee — “Mulan” would earn Disney just over $149 million in grosses in its first three weeks. That is, to put it mildly, not nearly enough to break even.

“Mulan” is one of Disney’s more well-known titles, especially for parents who grew up in the ’90s and fondly remember the animated musical feature. The studio is banking on that name recognition justifying the higher $29.95 price point. But as was the case before the pandemic for so many potential blockbusters, should domestic interest in “Mulan” prove softer than top-line hopes, its full earnings potential will be decided largely by its theatrical release in China.

Well, we're all very worried. God knows Disney is broke. Can we pass the hat for them?

As much as it wants cause Disney owns Disney+ and no one will know. 🤯

Just release it gradually worldwide or wait and start actually letting movies stay in theaters for longer than 2-4weeks.

Is this a rhetorical Q?

they just threw this movie under the bus imho

It’s gonna flop.

I do feel for theaters but this is model is where this was all heading to anyway, pandemic or no pandemic - it's just hastened movie theater demise in a brutal way no one could have predicted.

Variety have got it right. Those interested in VPOD, please read this article. It explains why VPOD is the most economical option to release such a high end movie (Mulan) in these troubled times.

It’ll have far more than 8.4 million rentals, just watch. 10 million rentals alone is 300 million. And there’s the theatrical release in Asia.

Hopefully nothing!

Just Remember That the Original Mulan Is PerfectDisney announced recently that the live-action remake of Mulan will now be available to Disney+ subscribers on September 4 in lieu of a theatrical release. The movie will cost $29.99 to rent, on top of the $6.99 it already costs to subscribe to the service. This is well and good for Disney, a company that is certainly hopeful that an American public starved for new content will pony up the scratch. But before you consider dropping $30 on a gritty remake, please consider watching the original Mulan, which is, in my opinion, unimpeachable. \n
