WASHINGTON — Musician Dickey Betts, who helped define the Southern rock genre in the 60s and 70s as the guitarist and co-founder of the Allman Brothers Band, has died, his family said. He was 80. , Betts' family wrote that he died peacefully at his home in Florida.

"It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Betts family announce the peaceful passing of Forrest Richard 'Dickey' Betts at the age of 80 years old," the post read."The legendary performer, songwriter, bandleader and family patriarch passed away earlier today at his home in Osprey, FL., surrounded by his family. Dickey was larger than life, and his loss will be felt world-wide.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer died at his home in Osprey, Florida, David Spero, Betts’ manager of 20 years, confirmed to the Associated Press. Betts had been battling cancer for more than a year and had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Spero said. “He was surrounded by his whole family and he passed peacefully. They didn’t think he was in any pain,” Spero said by phone. “He’d had cancer for over a year. He was introduced into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Allman Brothers Band in 1995.
