MLB Network's Jon Morosi spoke with Tony Anderson about the energy surrounding the 2023 WBC and why fans are starting to take notice.Three months before spring training began, back when the sting of October free time lingered at the front of his mind, Geraldo Perdomo showed up at Salt River Fields with a mission.
That performance wiped away the shine with which Perdomo entered 2022, when he was a top 100 prospect in baseball. But for the Diamondbacks, Perdomo’s development remains critical. Ahmed’s contract is up after this season and many outside evaluators believe top prospect Jordan Lawlar will eventually have to be moved away from shortstop, although the club itself is steadfast in its belief that Lawlar will develop into an MLB-quality defender at the position.
At their training facility, the Diamondbacks developed a set of exercises to address Perdomo’s imbalance. Facing pitching machines, they had him jump from his front foot onto his back heel before the pitch was delivered. Over the winter, proof arrived in the form of success in the Dominican Winter League. Perdomo only got 26 plate appearances there, but he went 9-for-20 with two walks, four doubles and just one strikeout.Spring training has been similarly fruitful. In 28 at-bats, Perdomo is hitting .321 with six walks.
A year ago, left-hander Caleb Smith had 15 relief appearances in which he recorded six outs or more, but this year’s bullpen appears unlikely to have a long man, assuming the Diamondbacks do, in fact, choose to send down either Jameson or Nelson, as they have hinted they will.
